Ironing out the Wrinkles (Orwo N74+)

Portrait of an elderly sitting next to his shop at Malleshwaram (Bangalore). While crossing the street, quite often I see him, sitting silently. Usually, there is one more person who works in this laundry (or a tailor) shop. One evening, I was walking down the street and thought of taking his pic. I gently asked and took this portrait.

Shot with 35mm Orwo film (pushed to 800) and Nikon 50 mm. For film development notes, please read my previous post: Man with an Electric Tuktuk.

Ready for Winter! (Orwo N74+ Pushed to 800)

Portrait of an elderly sitting on a platform adjacent to a shop. It was evening, and I asked for a photo. He agreed.

Shot nearby my home (in Ajmer), in an area previously famous by the name "Chungi Naka", having a multitude of stores and makeshift vegetable carts (fresh from nearby villages!).

During my childhood, I used to visit this area a lot. Now, with the construction of a new flyover, the area has been cleared. It has lost its active identity (at least to me!). Most of the shops are gone. However, as evening approaches, people socialize near shops and have tea-chai-bidi, as usual. But very few people know me now (penalty for growing up and moving, alas!).

Shot on Orwo N74+ film pushed to 800 with a 50mm Nikon.
For film development notes, please read my previous post: Man with an Electric Tuktuk.

Man with an Electric Tuktuk (Orwo N74+ Pushed to 800)

Portrait of a tuk-tuk driver waiting for the next ride. Battery-powered tuk-tuks (like teslas!?) are becoming quite common mainly in the northern part of India. He was parked near JLN road (Ajmer, Rajasthan). I asked him for a photo. He gently nodded his head. It was dark, so I used a built-in flash of my Nikon F80 (with 50 mm).

Development Notes:

In my first test, I shot Orwo at EI 320 and developed at 400. I was impressed with the quality and details. The contrast was low. This time I thought of pushing it at 800 by underexposing it by 1 stop. The film pushes normally, with some visible grain and slight loss of detail in shadow areas. The technical notes are as follows:

Film: Orwo N74+ shot at EI 640 developed for 800.
Developer: HC110 Dilution H at 20º C. Developed for 30 min. Continuous agitation+inversion for first 60 sec, then 5 agitation+inversion every 3 min.
(If you agitate every min, develop for 20 min.)

Helping Hand (Orwo N74+ Film)

Helping Hand: The whole idea was to thematically capture hands, and the way they serve people, direct or indirect.

I also wanted to test a new black and white film, Orwo, from East Germany.

Presenting, a set of 10 images taken during first week of November 17 in Malleshwaram, Bangalore.

Development Notes

  • Film: 35 mm Orwo N74+ 400
  • Film EI: 320
  • Developer: HC110 Dilution H 13.5 min.

Sigma DP2 Merrill at 1600 ISO and film like appearance (Feat. Namma Bangalore Habba Event Pics)

Set of images taken at flea market during the night of Namma Bangalore Habba event (20th-Aug-17) at Sankey Tank Lakeside.
The images were shot with Sigma DP2 Merrill at 1600 ISO. These foveon sensor based cameras are notorious in high iso situations. The idea was to keep shutter speed close to 1/125 with aperture wide open. However, in many case it has gone down to 1/30. While processing the raw X3F files in SPP, additional grain feature was enabled to render film like appearance. The results look similar to a 400 ISO film pushed to 1600.

Konica Pop at IISc!

Konica Pop is 80s point and shoot film camera with 36mm fixed focus lens. Fixed shutter of 1/125 but variable aperture F/4 ~ F/11 and Flash dependent upon selected ISO.
I got one from home, that belonged to my late uncle. My early childhood was captured using Konica. I still get fascinated whenever I hold it!

Some shots at IISc taken using Konica Pop camera with a roll of Ilford HP5 (expired) film. Stand developed using HC110.

Smiling Man

Smiling Man (film)

He works at a food canteen in my college, where I visit regularly.

On one Sunday, while I was loading a film (HP5+) on my F80, he was starring at me with surprise -  like a little kid. I asked if I could take his picture. And he smiled like this. Took this image with Nikon 85mm lens at F4.

Later, I developed the roll and gave him a printed copy of this photograph. The smile was bigger this time.

Location: Prakruthi Restaurant, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Film: Ilford Hp5+ at EI 320 (expired 2009).
Developer: 4ml (for 24 shot film) HC110 in 600 ml 20º C water. Semi Stand Development for 1 hr. 5 inversions in start then at 5 at 30th min.
Scanned using Canoscan 8600F. Post-processed in Photoshop.
