If you are a Matrix Movie fan (like me ;) ) and looking for the Matrix Code screensaver for your Mac. You can download this make it your screensaver!
It's a matrix code screensaver that displays tumbling matrix characters inspired by the movie. Unlike other screensavers, this one is ad-free and malware/adware free. It is compiled natively and hence very light over CPU/GPU. The battery consumption won't be much, and the screen looks gorgeous!
About:
In 2012 after OS X 10.8 was released, Mathew, the original developer of this screen saver, stopped development support for this famous Matrix screensaver for Mac OS X. Thankfully, he kept the source code available for download. Since it is one of my favourite screensavers, I decided to download the source code and build it again for the latest version. With few code changes, it compiled correctly and started working. I've shared the compiled versions for fans.
Supported Platforms:
- macOSes supporting OpenGL API i.e. Mojave on Intel Macs
- Now that Apple has deprecated OpenGL, it is impossible to compile it for the newer platforms that do not support OpenGL.
- Has anyone tried it on M1 macs?
Installation Instructions:
- Download the screen saver from the download link listed below.
- Unzip it and you'll find RedPill.saver.
- Double click on it.
- System Preferences will pop up where it will ask you to install it.
- Go ahead, authenticate and install!
- Choose "RedPill" from the list of installed screen savers. Mostly It will be shown in last.
- For configuring the speed and various other options, you can click on Screen Saver Options right below the screen saver preview window.
- By default it will work on all the monitors attached to your Mac but the display behavior can be modified in Screen Saver Options.

Hi Mathieu St-Vincent, You can set "Approach Velocity" to "Slow" for flatter look.

Apparently the PC version has a 1:1 ratio where the characters are small and all the same size, just like the computer screens in the movie. Could you write in an option for this in a future update? Awesome work!

Thanks so much for keeping this project alive! I remember installing this screensaver many years ago, and was delighted to find it again for my modern Macs.
I agree with what some other commenters have said -- it would be great to have an option that makes the code look like the displays in the Matrix movies. An option for the characters to all be the same size would help, as would the ability to keep them in orderly rows (instead of overlapping) and to choose the size of the characters (I'm using 27" monitors and they look huge). I don't want to presume how easy/difficult those changes would be, but I think they would go a long way toward making the perfect Matrix screensaver if possible.
